Swipe Hype is a free mobile and web game from GSN Digital, the games division of the GSN (Game Show Network) TV network. Players compete against their friends in real-time tournaments in which they swipe their screens to pair matching game pieces before time runs out. Disruptive gameplay allows players to surprise their opponents by “exploding” their game board, scrambling their game pieces or freezing their game. Players login to the simple yet addictive game with their Facebook account, allowing players to find new friends to compete against.
Tod Bouris, principal development engineer at GSN Digital, had been managing thousands of lines of PHP code, various web servers, and other infrastructure elements that proved difficult and time-consuming for his small team. This challenge, coupled with the daunting prospect of scaling the backend with the app’s growth, led the team to seek a different approach.
The team discovered Kinvey, a cloud backend platform that would allow them to maintain and scale the app without a line of PHP code. Swipe Hype uses Kinvey to implement user management, social integration, push, high score management, and “custom endpoints” to make the game experience engaging and addictive. “We were able to save months of work by easily creating the backend with Kinvey,” said Tod. “We moved the entire app onto their platform in a day or two.”
